About Geography Markup Language (GML)

The OGC XML standard used by government cadastres and INSPIRE datasets across Europe.

Worth knowing: Schema-heavy; application schemas may need the companion .xsd.

About GeoPackage (GPKG)

The modern OGC standard — a single SQLite file holding many layers, vector and raster, with no size or field-name limits. The recommended successor to Shapefile.
