About ESRI Shapefile (SHP)

The long-standing GIS interchange workhorse. A "file" is really a bundle: .shp geometry, .dbf attributes, .shx index and .prj coordinate system — keep them together (or zip them).

Worth knowing: One geometry type per layer; attribute names truncated to 10 characters; 2 GB size ceiling.

About KMZ (zipped KML) (KMZ)

KML in a zip container — the compact form Google Earth saves and shares. Identical content to KML, a fraction of the size.

Worth knowing: Same constraints as KML; embedded images/models inside the archive are passed through, not converted.
